So, this morning, I had a bit of a late start, and I had to be at the school for the standardized patient activity at 0800. I got there with a few minutes to spare, and as soon as I got sat down, the professor pulled my name out of the hat to go first. Funny how that works...
The activity was cool, though. There were three of us that went together, one as the nurse just getting off shift (me), one as the nurse just coming on shift, and one as the tech. The scenario was receiving a patient in transfer from the ICU and we had to give report to the patient's mom about what had been going on and what we were planning to do. Apparently, we three did an awesome job because we took care of everything we needed to take care, took note of important issues, and were able to meet the mom's needs and give her some reassurance. The one mistake I made was missing the NPO (nothing by mouth) order, but the other "nurse" caught it and made up for my slip-up pretty well. And, in return, I made up for his slip up saying that the NPO order was for a procedure; this made the patient's mom panic, so I stepped up and said that it's usually accompanied by a procedure, but because there was some issue with the patient's blood sugar and chemistry, we didn't want to feed him anything that could cause more imbalance.
Oh, I should say this was not a real situation. The patient was one of the mannequins, and the "mom" was an actress. But, it was fun and not as scary as I thought it was going to be. And, we finished up really quickly and the professors watching said we did really good. So, I went home to rest and study up some more before the examination at 1300.
This examination was not very much fun, but I did well enough. For the most part, I like my communication class, except that it's an all day event with the same professor all day long. It makes it hard to stay focused. And, after the exam, I was told I could just leave. But, I found out later that I wasn't supposed to. Oops. Apparently, one of the professors had another little blurb to say about the IPR that we had to do the next week (a similar thing to the standardized patient we had done today, just individual, and we have to write down the entire conversation, all the body language, then analyze and interpret it all). I didn't miss much, apparently; I just had to get from a classmate when my time was.
Tomorrow is preschool!!
